After completing law school at the University of Oslo, he joined the Foreign Service in 1989. After two years in the Legal department, and a year at the Diplomatic Academy, he was posted as Embassy Secretary in Central America and later at the Norwegian delegation to NATO in Brussels. From 1997 he served as Advisor and Special Advisor at the Cabinet of the Foreign Minister. In 2001 he was posted as Head of Mission in Havana, Cuba. In 2005 he joined and later headed the Section for Peace and Reconciliation. In 2009 he was assigned to the Norwegian Embassy in Washington DC, as Deputy Chief of Mission. In 2012 he became Ambassador to Spain and Andorra. In 2016 he was posted as Ambassador to Colombia. Returning to Norway in 2018 he served as Director General/Chief of Protocol.
Since September 2021 he is the Norwegian Ambassador to Italy, Malta and San Marino.
